I found a simple solution, i uninstalled the software, rebooted, downloaded the latest software from wsftp and reinstalled it.
for the record, the following is the proceedure i went through 10 times:
ws ftp
you click on renew, when webpage opens, asks for your email, you fill in an email address, tels you to await email, you get email with a licence number, you click on renew now link in the email, webpage opens telling you that it hs been sucessfully renewed, no other links or actions mentioned here or in the email.
i even tried this with different emails, always got the same licence no and not able to open program.

when i got email i copied the hyperlink from the renew now button, and pasted it into chrome
